Even if they loose a lot of players initially CCP gets a second shot at attracting FPS players. They can release a pretty good game at the end of this year, get a year of player feedback, and then, at the end of 2013, time the release of version 2.0 with the next generation of consoles. Riding on that CCP can draw the attention of FPS players if they combine everything they learn in the first year with the capabilities of the new console and ride on all the hype that will surround it. |

Draco Dustflier wrote:... We'll get PVE to absorb the Co-op fans, gladiator arenas for CoD lone wolves, titan invasions for difficulty junkies (i hope), and eventually the game will have something for everybody ... Draco, you've put your finger on the other growth strategy -- incremental a-la EVE. And I agree that if it survives all the things you are talking about could happen.
The debate we've seen growing up is if the game can sustain itself without a regular influx of traditional FPS gamers.
I'm wondering if CCP can successfully draw those gamers' attention in the high-profile-event driven world of FPS games. I'm certain they will have a second trip to the well in the fall of 2013 riding on Sony and the new console. But I have not seen them show the marketing muscle to generate that interest on their own.
So I see two questions: will EVE style incremental growth be economically sustainable for DUST 514? If it will not be, does CCP have robust alternative plans to keep the player counts and interaction up enough to keep the game alive? Under any circumstance, CCP (in my opinion) gets a little breathing room because of the new console push that it will get at the end of 2013.

Nos Faust wrote:Don't forget about the mmo community they'll be dipping into.. they're out there just waiting for the next big thing Nos, who in the MMO community do you think DUST 514 will attract? What games are they playing now? I've seen posts that say there aren't enough RPG elements (like crafting) planned to draw those folks in.

Iron Wolf Saber wrote:Crafting is planned. As well as empire control. As well as market tycoons, As well as roleplay oh wait... that's already in merc. Iron Wolf I know all of those things were talked about -- but I didn't know they were all decided to be built into the DUST 514 side of the game. I thought that a corporation that spanned both EVE and DUST 514 would have most of them in the EVE side.
Could you point me to the posts where there's been a commitment to put them in DUST 514 without a connection to EVE?
I don't know if an MMO player would be interested in DUST 514 if they had to get their RPG elements in EVE.

Iron Wolf Saber wrote:There are many, analogy ccp put it was that if an asteriod where to hit earth and knock out either pool of players the other game would continue to go on without the other half. This means everything that you think we may need an eve online player for will be also in our hands as well. I disagree with your conclusion. I believe what the analogy means is not that the game would have everything that I think we may need -- rather I believe it means that the game will have everything that CCP -- eventually -- think the game may need. Without a commitment to a particular feature from CCP we don't have any evidence, one way or another, that a it will be in the game.
Can you point me to statements from CCP that say that Crafting, empire control, market tycoons and further role playing will be in DUST 514? |

Nos Faust wrote:Those like myself who enjoy a good mmo but really don't care for the slow turn based combat systems so many seem to offer. l think the combined fps and mmo aspects will draw quite a few people in. Nos, that makes a lot of sense. Do you have any ideas about how CCP could reach out to those folks? What would need to be in the DUST 514 side of the game to draw them in?

Nos Faust wrote:Unless l'm mistaken the CEO is being interviewed today, go ask him or the devs these questions. l don't have an answer for everything but l do know there are mmo players that will be here when it's released Sorry man -- I thought that since you were one of the folks coming from MMOs who was interested in DUST you'd have insights into how CCP could appeal to you. I bet you know stuff that the CEO doesn't know about it.

Nos Faust wrote:Is there a particular reason you're trying to bait me? You singled me out with your questions and l answered what l could yet you just keep coming.. No man, not at all. Just the opposite. I thought you had a good point I didn't know anything about. I figured if I asked you'd want to expand your answer. There are darn few people who come up with any good ideas at all and I was trying to encourage you to say more. I'll get out of your face but it was not my intention to bait you in any way. Apologies again.
